Why Do Valves Leak? Common Causes and Simple Prevention

Valve leakage is one of the most frequent problems in industrial pipelines. Even minor leaks can waste media and cause environmental issues, while serious leaks may lead to safety risks. Understanding the main causes helps prevent problems before they escalate.

1. Damaged Sealing Surfaces

This is the most common cause. Wear, scratches, corrosion, or trapped particles on the sealing surfaces (seat, disc, or ball) prevent tight contact.
Prevention tip: Clean the pipeline thoroughly before installation. Choose hard-seated or wear-resistant valves when the medium contains particles.

2. Leakage at the Packing

Poor sealing between the stem and packing often leads to external leakage, especially in frequently operated or aging valves.
Prevention tip: Regularly check and moderately tighten the packing. Replace aged packing in time and avoid over-tightening, which can cause stem sticking.

3. Gasket Failure

Aged, misaligned, or incompatible gaskets at flanged connections frequently cause leaks.
Prevention tip: Select gaskets suitable for the medium and temperature. Tighten bolts evenly and symmetrically during installation.

4. Incorrect Selection or Installation

Using a valve that does not match the pressure, temperature, or medium, or installing it with excessive pipeline stress, accelerates leakage.
Prevention tip: Select valves strictly according to working conditions. Ensure proper pipeline alignment and avoid forced connections.

5. Improper Operation and Maintenance

Incomplete opening/closing, excessive force, or long-term inactivity can cause seal sticking or corrosion.
Prevention tip: Operate valves correctly and perform regular cycling and inspections.

Most valve leaks can be prevented. Proper selection, correct installation, and routine maintenance are the most effective ways to reduce leakage risks. Addressing issues early is always more cost-effective than waiting for serious failure.
