Ball Valve Selection Guide
Ball Valve Selection Guide
Ball valves are popular for their reliable shut-off, low pressure drop, and durability. They are widely used in oil & gas, chemical, water treatment, and industrial pipelines. Selecting the right ball valve prevents leakage, high torque issues, and early failure. Here’s a concise selection guide.

1. Understand the Main Types
- Floating Ball Valve: Simple design, good for low to medium pressure. The ball is held by the seats.
- Trunnion-Mounted Ball Valve: Suitable for high pressure and large sizes. The ball is supported by trunnions, reducing seat load.
- Full Port vs Reduced Port: Full port offers minimal pressure drop; reduced port is more economical and compact.
- One-piece, Two-piece, Three-piece: Three-piece design allows easy maintenance without removing the valve from the line.
2. Key Selection Parameters
- Size & Pressure Rating: Match pipe size. Choose pressure class (e.g., Class 150, 300, 600) equal to or higher than system pressure.
- Material Compatibility:
- Water / air: Carbon steel or stainless steel 304
- Corrosive media: Stainless steel 316 / 316L
- High temperature or abrasive: Special alloys or hard-faced seats
- Seat & Seal Material: PTFE (common), reinforced PTFE, PEEK, or metal seats for high temperature.
- End Connection: Flanged, threaded, welded, or socket weld — match your pipeline standard.
- Operation: Manual lever/gear, pneumatic, or electric actuator. Ensure adequate torque.
3. Quick Application Recommendations
- General water & HVAC: Floating ball valve, full or reduced port, soft seat
- High pressure / oil & gas: Trunnion-mounted ball valve with metal or high-performance seats
- Corrosive chemicals: Stainless steel 316 with PTFE or special seats
- Frequent maintenance needs: Three-piece ball valve
4. Selection Checklist
- Pipe size, pressure, temperature, and media confirmed
- Body, ball, and seat materials compatible with the media
- Port type (full/reduced) selected
- End connection matches the pipeline
- Actuator torque is sufficient
- Fire-safe, anti-static, or other certifications required
Follow these points to choose a suitable ball valve. For critical or complex conditions, share full operating data with the supplier for final confirmation.
